Will Speaker Ryan Condemn Bob Dold & Mike Coffman Next?

Speaker Ryan is getting a lot of (read: too much) credit for condemning Donald Trump’s failure to adequately disavow David Duke and the KKK saying this morning, “If a person wants to be the nominee of the Republican party, there can be no evasion and no games, they must reject any group  or cause that is built on bigotry.”

That’s certainly a bare-minimum standard to which any modern political party should hold their presidential nominee. The real question is: Will Paul Ryan apply that same standard to members of his own Conference?

If Speaker Ryan really believes that Republicans “must reject any group  or cause that is built on bigotry,” then he has a responsibility not just to condemn Donald Trump, but also to condemn Congressmen Mike Coffman and Bob Dold who both proudly attended the conference of Act! For America, which has been described as the “nation’s leading anti-Muslim hate group.” And of course, it had to be awkward condemning Republicans who associate with hate groups at a press conference with Rep. Scalise.

If Speaker Ryan really believes that Republicans shouldn’t be associated with ‘any group or cause that is built on bigotry,’ he should immediately condemn Reps. Coffman and Dold for speaking to a hate group. If he fails to do so, he should be prepared to explain to onlookers why Trump’s trail of hate runs right through his own backyard.
